I went to Seoul on September 5 to participate FAOPS 2024. I gave a presentation entitled "Potential predictors of necrotizing enterocolitis in extremely low-birth-weight infants: Analyses of coagulation and fibrinolysis markers at birth at a single institution during a past decade." In the study, we aimed to investigate the pathogenesis and predictors of the onset of surgical necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in extremely low-birth-weight infants (ELBWIs) by analyzing blood test results, including coagulation and fibrinolysis markers, at birth. This is a retrospective case-control study. We reviewed the medical records of ELBWIs born at our institution between 2013 and 2022. Patients with and without a diagnosis of surgical NEC were categorized into the NEC group (n=20) and the control group (n=226), respectively. Patients’ background characteristics and blood test results, including coagulation and fibrinolysis markers at birth, were compared between the two groups. In the results the surgical NEC groups had lower fibrinogen and higher D-dimer levels than NEC group. In conclusion, low fibrinogen and high D-dimer levels at birth would be potential predictors of the onset of surgical NEC in ELBWIs. From the chairperson and audience, there are questions about the timing of the blood test, other potential markers, and the relationship between the coagulation or fibrinolysis markers and the fetal events. I learned a lot through the attending FAOPS 2024. I appreciate the research grant and for the opportunity.
