FAOPS 2024 Seoul Participation Report

Yu Masuda

Department of Pediatrics, Kobe University Hospital

I recently received a grant from the Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine to send young researchers to participate in FAOPS 2024 Seoul. It was my first time to participate in an international academic conference, and since I had little experience in traveling overseas, I was very anxious at first. I made a presentation titled “Maternal risk factors for vitamin K deficiency in neonates: A matched case-control study” at the poster session. The content was an introduction of a study on maternal risk factors for vitamin K deficiency in neonates diagnosed by high-sensitivity PIVKA-II, which showed that maternal obesity may be associated with vitamin K deficiency in neonates. Unfortunately, no questions were received from the audience, although we waited around the posters for free discussion. Throughout the conference, there were presentations and lectures in various fields, and I was able to learn about the actual perinatal care in other countries. I keenly felt my own lack of language skills, and I would like to improve myself, aiming at the doctors who presented in English and participated in the Q&A session. There were many restaurants around the venue, and I was able to enjoy the atmosphere and cuisine of downtown Seoul in the evening. I would like to thank all the people involved in the Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine for giving me such a valuable experience.
