FAOPS 2024 Seoul Participation Report

Kazuto Ueda

Department of Pediatric, Nagoya University Hospital

Thanks to the great support from the Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine, I had the opportunity to attend FAOPS2024 to present my research and to speak at the symposium titled "Deciding for babies - ethical challenges and decision making in the NICU."

In the Young Investigator session, I presented the clinical study on instantaneous CO2 as a novel non-invasive monitoring during high-frequency oscillation ventilation (HFOV) performed at Nagoya University Hospital. The audience responded positively to its availability. This research received high evaluation and I was honored with the Young Investigator Award.

At the symposium, I participated as a symposiast alongside physicians from Korea, Malaysia, and Australia to address ethical challenges in the NICU. I explained how Japan approaches decision-making not by applying uniform classification but through discussions based on each medical evaluation. I also introduced that establishing a system and acts to support children with medical care has made such discussions possible. The floor discussion allowed for a thorough exchange of policies regarding the treatment and decision-making process for extremely premature infants or those with life-threatening conditions.

Through my participation in FAOPS2024, I was able to build connections with physicians from many countries. I could obtain a wider perspective on neonatal care from an international standpoint. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and will develop this experience to contribute to the advancement of neonatology in the future.
